Retirement Cake    Special Occasion Cake Prices Vary

This week I was asked to make a retirement cake with a “Kubota Tractor” theme. Since I did not know what a Kubota Tractor was I went to the company’s website to get an idea of what the tractor looked like. I also searched online and came across a few pictures of cakes that had this theme as well.

This was an eight inch two layer lemon cake with lemon curd filling and butter cream frosting.  The tractor was made from homemade marshmallow fondant and sculpted lemon cake. I hand colored the fondant orange and black. The motor was lemon cake sculpted and covered with orange fondant.  The “dirt” was lemon cake colored brown. I colored the butter cream green and used a grass tip to make the grass on the sides and top of the cake. My sign which reads “Happy Retirement: Straight Rows Ahead” was made from white marshmallow fondant and I used edible pens to write the message.

My thoughts:  Wow! So this cake was challenging and time consuming. I think the cake turned out great for my first tractor cake. I will say it is much easier to follow tutorials than to come up with your fondant design as I did with this cake. However, I do feel like my customers are stretching me in my endeavors which is much needed if I continue to make cakes. Practice makes perfect.  So with that said, bring it! (winks)

Things needed:  I need to patient when I do cakes like this.

Final thoughts:  I am quite proud of myself for taking on this cake. The final outcome surprised me and my customers enjoyed this cake very much. That makes it all worth while.
